What is shiatsu massage?
Shiatsu massage, like almost all massages, is a manual therapy originated in Japan, although the basis of its technique also drinks from the sources of traditional Chinese medicine.
The technique that characterizes the shiatsu is the one of the use of the pressure, with intensity of moderate to soft, on the affected zones. It is used mainly the thumb and the palm of the hand, but also the elbows and even the knees.
Generally, the pressure with the thumbs that is exerted in shiatsu massages coincides with the acupuncture points of Chinese medicine. Kneading, stretching, and mobilization techniques are also used, but to a lesser extent.
How is a shiatsu massage session?
The shiatsu session takes place in a spacious, ventilated room with little outside noise.
For this type of massage it is not necessary to undress but to wear comfortable clothes and do not press the body. The session is usually on the floor or a mat that is not too soft. You usually have the option of listening to music or receiving therapy in silence.
When the patient is correctly positioned, the masseur performs a mobilization of the body and its energies, the so-called “Chi”. In this way, he is making a recognition of the possible problems. It will then exert gentle, but firm pressure on areas that are determined to need treatment.
Chi in Shiatsu
Chi, according to traditional Chinese medicine, is a vital energy that flows through the body through channels called meridians. When something disturbs that flow and hinders it, the ailments occur. The shiatsu tries to unlock with the pressures and massages in the points of jam, according to each disease.

Do not confuse shiatsu massage with Digit puncture. Confusion is common since both have a common base technique with the meridians of acupuncture.
